How to make an axolotl coloring page
- Click a quick style such as Axolotl, Axolotl face, Sitting axolotl, Lily pad or Seaweed. Or open the ‘Picture’ menu and choose a drawing, or leave it on ‘Surprise me’.
- Open ‘Layout’ and choose ‘One big picture’, ‘2 pictures’, ‘4 pictures’, ‘6 pictures’ or ‘Folding card’.
- With one big picture, open ‘Backdrop’. ‘Automatic’ gives the axolotl a pond; you can also pick Ocean, Garden or another scene, or ‘None’.
- The picture’s name is shown under each picture by default. Untick ‘Show the picture’s name’ to remove it.
- Type a ‘Headline’ of up to 40 characters, set ‘Writing lines’ from 0 to 6 and choose a ‘Letter style’ of Chunky or Rounded.
- Under ‘Page settings’, choose the paper (US Letter or A4), orientation, line weight (Thin, Medium or Thick) and page border. You can also add a title and a name line.
- Set ‘Number of pages’ (1 to 30) if you want more than one sheet.
- Press ‘New design’ (or the N key) for a fresh page with the same settings. Then press ‘Print’ or ‘Download PDF’.
‘Download PNG’ and ‘Download SVG’ save page 1 as an image, ‘Copy link’ copies an address that reopens the same page, and ‘Color it online’ opens the same picture in the site’s online coloring tool.
What is an axolotl?
The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a salamander that stays aquatic and keeps its external gills for life. Biologists call this neoteny: it reaches adult size and can breed without changing into a land-living adult. Its name comes from the Nahuatl language. Axolotls come from lakes and wetlands in the highlands of Mexico, such as Xochimilco, near Mexico City. In the wild the species is critically endangered, while many are kept in captivity and used in science, partly because they can regrow lost body parts, including limbs. A short talk about this goes well with the coloring.
Which colors can I use?
Axolotls in captivity come in several colors. The wild type is dark, with brown, olive or black patches. The leucistic type is pale pink or white with dark eyes, and the golden albino is yellow-gold. The gills often look pink or red. On the coloring page the gills are separate feathery stalks, three on each side, so each one can have its own color. Because the drawing is cartoon-style, you can also color an axolotl blue, purple or with rainbow gills.
Which axolotl drawing should I pick?
The swimming axolotl is the most realistic: a long body, tail fin, four legs and the gills swept back from its head. The axolotl face is the easiest to color and fits one big page well. The sitting axolotl is upright, with arms, legs and a curled tail, which makes a cute character for stickers or cards. The lily pad, seaweed and bubbles can fill a pond scene when you use the ‘4 pictures’ or ‘6 pictures’ layout.
Can I print a pond coloring book?
Yes. Choose the quick style ‘Whole set, one per page’ for an 11-page pack with the three axolotls, the lily pad, seaweed, bubbles and the pond friends, or ‘4 pictures per page’ to put four different pictures on every sheet. The ‘Folding card’ layout puts one picture on the front and To:, From: and message lines inside, which is a simple way to make a handmade card.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an axolotl coloring page for toddlers?
The axolotl face and the sitting axolotl have big, simple shapes. Choose a Thick line weight under Page settings to make the lines easier for small hands.
Is the Minecraft axolotl included?
No. All the drawings here are original and show the real animal in a friendly cartoon style. No video game or movie characters are used.
Why does the axolotl smile?
Axolotls have a wide mouth, and its shape makes them look as if they are smiling. In the drawings we show it as a small curved line.
Can I add my own words?
Yes. Type a Headline of up to 40 characters, or set Writing lines from 0 to 6 to print lines under the picture, for example for facts the child has learned about axolotls.
What paper and settings work best?
US Letter or A4 both work. Use Medium line weight for crayons and Thin for colored pencils and fine markers, and choose Landscape for the swimming axolotl, which is wider than it is tall.
Can I use what I make with the axolotl coloring page commercially?
Yes. Everything you make here is royalty-free for personal, classroom and commercial use, including KDP books, Etsy printables and Teachers Pay Teachers. No credit is required. The only thing you may not do is copy the generator or the site itself to run a competing service; see the terms.
