How to make galaxy colouring pages
- Click a quick style such as Spiral galaxy, Barred spiral galaxy, Nebula, Comet, Big Dipper or Telescope. Or open the ‘Picture’ menu and choose a drawing, or leave it on ‘Surprise me’.
- Open ‘Layout’ and choose ‘One big picture’, ‘2 pictures’, ‘4 pictures’, ‘6 pictures’ or ‘Folding card’.
- With one big picture, open ‘Backdrop’. ‘Automatic’ picks a night sky or deep space for the picture; you can also choose a scene yourself, or ‘None’ for a plain page.
- The picture’s name is shown under each picture by default. Untick ‘Show the picture’s name’ to remove it.
- Type a ‘Headline’ of up to 40 characters, set ‘Writing lines’ from 0 to 6 and choose a ‘Letter style’ of Chunky or Rounded.
- Under ‘Page settings’, choose the paper (US Letter or A4), orientation, line weight (Thin, Medium or Thick) and page border. You can also add a title and a name line.
- Set ‘Number of pages’ (1 to 30) for a class set or a small book.
- Press ‘New design’ (or the N key) for a fresh page with the same settings. Then press ‘Print’ or ‘Download PDF’.
‘Download PNG’ and ‘Download SVG’ save page 1 as an image, ‘Copy link’ copies an address that reopens the same page, and ‘Color it online’ opens the same picture in the site’s online coloring tool.
What is a galaxy?
A galaxy is a huge system of stars, gas, dust and dark matter held together by gravity. The word comes from the Greek for ‘milky’, which is how the Milky Way looks from Earth. Galaxies are grouped by shape as elliptical, spiral or irregular. The Milky Way, our own galaxy, is a barred spiral and is estimated to hold 100 to 400 billion stars. The galaxy coloring pages show two spiral shapes, drawn as simple swirls with a bright center, so you can color the arms in any color.
Spiral galaxy or barred spiral galaxy?
In a spiral galaxy the arms wind out from the center. In a barred spiral galaxy the arms start at the ends of a bar of stars that crosses the center. The first drawing shows three curved arms around a round core. The second shows a bar with two arms curling away from its ends. Both are cartoons made for coloring and are not accurate maps of a real galaxy. The bright core is a good place for yellow and white, and the arms work well in blue, purple and pink.
What else is in the night sky?
A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust in space, and many nebulae are places where new stars form. A comet is a small icy body that grows a glowing tail of gas and dust when it comes near the Sun. The Big Dipper is a pattern of seven bright stars, shown here as a simplified star chart. The telescope, flying saucer and rocket add fun pictures, and Saturn, Jupiter, Earth and the Moon are the planet and moon drawings from the site’s space pages.
Can I print a galaxy coloring book?
Yes. Choose the quick style ‘Whole set, one per page’ for a 13-page pack with one picture on each page, or ‘4 pictures per page’ to put four different pictures on every sheet. The ‘Folding card’ layout puts one picture on the front and To:, From: and message lines inside. For a night-sky look, color the space around the picture dark blue or black and leave the stars and the galaxy core white or yellow.
Frequently asked questions
Are these galaxy coloring pages free?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. You can print as many pages as you like or save them as a PDF.
Are these galaxy coloring pages only for kids?
The pictures use medium outlines and large areas, so they suit children and adults who want something relaxed. Choose a Thin line weight under Page settings for a finer look.
Are planets and galaxies drawn to scale?
No. The drawings are friendly sketches for coloring, so sizes, colors and shapes are simplified.
Can I write on the page?
Yes. Type a Headline of up to 40 characters, or set Writing lines from 0 to 6 to print lines under the picture, for example for a space fact or a name for a new galaxy.
Which paper and pens work best?
Print on plain white paper for crayons and colored pencils, or on thicker paper if you want to use markers or watercolor. Choose Landscape if you pick the comet or the telescope, and a Thin line weight for finer detail.
Can I use what I make with the galaxy colouring commercially?
Yes. Everything you make here is royalty-free for personal, classroom and commercial use, including KDP books, Etsy printables and Teachers Pay Teachers. No credit is required. The only thing you may not do is copy the generator or the site itself to run a competing service; see the terms.
